Over 400 different bacteria live in our digestive tract alone - some of which are helpful to our system, and some of which are not. The good ones are known as Micro-Flora, and naturally occur in our body. The bad ones tend to arrive through food, age, disease and other environmental sources.
When our digestive system starts to malfunction due to illness, age, stress or even by taking prescription medicine (such as antibiotics), the good bacteria can be over-run by bad bacteria. By maintaining the balance of good and bad micro-organisms, our digestive system can work efficiently and ensure that the important vitamins, nutrients and enzymes are synthesised, and that toxins and other harmful ingredients in foods are removed.
